Studioing: As many as we are, as lonely as I am

An invitation from the Artistic Cohort 2024-26.

Join the Artistic Cohort to play with the choreographic through dancing, thinking, dreaming, witnessing and studying together.

Across these sessions the Artistic Cohort are opening some of the individual and collective questions they've been busy with across the last two years of Rose Choreographic School:

What can we do in a studio?

How can our practices pollute each other?

How do we think and learn through difference?

How do we sustain being in relation to one another?

We have no answers, the studios are open: Come speculate with us.

Rehearsing Rehearsal, conceived in September 2025 by Aliaskar Abarkas, is a series of sessions bringing participants together through collective sound-making, performance workshops and readings. It explores how temporary forms of collective presence can emerge before rehearsal begins.

Across these regular sessions, Abarkas gathered threads from which to structure a task-based choreography. The work centres each individual’s choices while foregrounding their relation to the group: how one action may influence another’s movement, sound and gesture, primarily through improvisation.

The score is structured through elements that are scalable, replaceable and removable. Time, for instance, is scalable: the work may take place briefly or continue indefinitely. Performers and their selected gestures are replaceable; sounds, texts and actions may enter, disappear or be carried by someone else.

The gestures, sounds and textual elements rely on memories of previous workshops. The work asks what remains—what stays in the body and in memory—as each participant experiences the process differently.

The work is not an open improvisation. It follows a clear choreographic structure, with agreed gestures, spatial rules, coded numbers and compositional tasks. Within this structure, performers use their judgement to determine the timing, duration and development of particular movements, sounds and relations. Improvisation therefore takes place within the score, rather than outside it.

This session is presented by Aliaskar Abarkas.
For this iteration of the score, music is composed and performed by Hyelim Kim.
Performed by Alessia Arcuri, Phoebe Beckett Chingono, Sarah Duffy, Lola Gillies-Creasey, Noemi Gunea, Nadia Khalaf, hadiru mahdi, Miriam Melake, Simina Neagu, Savannah Theis and Aisling Ward.
